Wondering

I have a Soverign Knight bow#1047 60" 47-3864 XX59# 28" I was wondering how much it worth. and also a Ben Pierson Varsity 7120 BF5697 60" 40# 28" left hand. I was wondering how each are worth. submitted by /u/Full-Cress7139 [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/2ZEm4Jk via

Hoyt Torrex - QAD Hunter Ultrarest too low or D loop too high

Just walked out of the shop with a brand new Torrex package that I have been salivating over since it was announced. The shop might not have tied D loop in the correct place on the string when setting up the bow, because I feel like the arrow does not rest at exactly 90 when nocked and the rest is engaged, it appears to be very slightly angled downward. I inspected the QAD Ultrarest and it appears there is no height adjustment - only forward/rear tilt and horizontal. I adjusted the tilt slightly to ensure the rest was at 90 when fully engaged. I began shooting at 10 yards to see how bad it was and it was worse than I thought, more than 6 inches below top holding point at such a short range. I dialed the sight all the way to the lowest possible setting and it is workable, just doesn't seem right at all. Haven't been able to test beyond 20 yards due to limited space (2nd highest holding point works at 20y). Another thing, when the shop was adjusting the draw weight to ...

Eye dominance vs. hand dominance….

I am right-handed, but left eye dominant. Not only is the selection of left-handed bows less than desirable, I’m also afraid that my left arm is weaker than my right. Has anyone learned to shoot with their “wrong” eye? Is it a terrible idea? I’m assuming it is easier to retrain your arms than your eyes, so I should probably just shoot lefty 🤷🏼‍♀️ submitted by /u/Disastrous_Peach6844 [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3Ea9dxF via

Gear Advice for Totally New and Very Tall

Hey folks, I'm a rather tall guy with an 86" wingspan (7ft 2in or 218cm). I'm interested in starting Archery practice with the goal of eventually bow hunting. Based on what I've read so far, my wingspan suggests I should have a 34.5" draw length. Based on guides I've found online, I'm seeing recommendations to start with a takedown bow, but I'm not certain if there will be any arms available in commercially available (non-custom) takedown systems that accommodate my draw length. (I've done some searching but haven't located any yet). Secondary concern is arrow selection. I'm finding carbon arrows up to 34" in length (but not any longer, yet). Assuming this journey doesn't take me in the direction of a reduced draw, I definitely don't want to shoot myself in the wrist :). Should I be approaching this from a different direction? Interested in any pointers the archery community has to share. submitted by /u/slamdamnspl...

Target vs Hunting - Shooting Dfferences?

For anyone who as experience with shooting both hunting compound bows and target compound bows: I shoot hunting compound and have shot Olympic recurve for a while, so not really a "newbie" to archery,, but I think it fits in this flair okay. I am a newbie to target compound bows though! I know there are physical differences and assume these things influenced form. I was wondering what the differences are between the two, specifically with shooting & form? And is there anything else that will help make picking up shooting target compound easier? Any information would be great! TIA submitted by /u/i_am_squidd [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/31dRmHt via

Getting my GF her first bow for Christmas!

All year my girlfriend has been hinting she'd probably want to start joining me out on my Saturday morning shoots in the desert. Well, I figure this Christmas, I'll give her a gift that we can both enjoy - more together time + archery! My question to you lovely archers: What size bow do I get her and what draw weight should it be? She's 5'5" and kind of a tiny little thing (but super fierce and will take down all comers), with a 64" arm span (both arms stretched out on each side). I want to get her a bow that is LEGIT, but also a good starter bow, yah know? One that she can draw back and start learning with, but can also reach a 30 yard target with ease. I was thinking a 64" bow (26" draw length), with a 25 pound draw weight? (I kind of want to try 30 pound draw weight but don't know if that's a bit much for her to start with.) Anyways, literally any input will be helpful before I make the purchase! Thank you so much in advan...

A beginner's guide to arrows

DON'T PANIC Buying your first arrows may seem simple, but it can quickly turn into an abyssal rabbit hole. This guide should hopefully tell you enough to get started without going too crazy. Materials: Fiberglass - is common at youth camps and with kiddie bow sets because they're cheap and durable. Don't buy these for any other purpose because that's not what they're meant for. Wood - was very popular for less expensive arrows before the price of carbon went down. It's also very popular among trad archers despite the inherent inconsistencies of using a natural material. **DO NOT USE WOOD ARROWS WITH A COMPOUND**. The spine charts are not made for the extra forces involved and you could get half an arrow through the hand. Aluminum - is typically less expensive than carbon, but when it bends, it tends to stay bent, unlike carbon, wood, or even fiberglass. Aluminum can be a great choice for beginners because of the reduced cost, and most beginners do fine wit...

Clicker really upped my grouping

Second time shooting with a clicker and it's fantastic. At 18m less than a 2 inch spread with 8 arrows over a dozen rounds. Before I was struggling with a 4-5 inch spread so this is a real game changer for me. If you're struggling with grouping a clicker might be the biggest bang for your buck available. The timeless backstop net question- but this time portable!

I know the horse has been thoroughly beaten on this one and of course horse mats come to mind as a suggestion even. However, I'm looking to do a portable backstop as I have access to a large field that the owner has graciously allowed me to practice in. Trying to keep this mobile and relatively lightweight/foldable. Has anyone tried making a net out of 1680 ballistic nylon? Wanting to setup a 12x6 for two targets to sit in front of, and I've got the PVC pipe frame figured out. I was eyeballing this stuff as it's relatively inexpensive and I could easily sew 2-3 layers of it and stay under what places are charging for smaller nets. Penny for your thoughts? This will be for a recurve bow up to 50# with practice field tips. submitted by /u/KipFox [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/31ab32U via

What is an average IBO rating for a recurve bow?

I'm doing my maths assignment on different distances bows with different draw weights shoot, and the equation uses the bows IBO rating in it. However I have no clue what an average IBO rating would be for a fairly expensive archery range planning to shoot 70m. Any help will be appreciated! submitted by /u/shmimbo11 [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3Dcgiww via

Are good groupings an indication of good form?

Or is it possible to achieve good groupings with bad form? I ask because im a novice still waiting to join a club to get any real pointers so im exclusively self taught with YouTube channels and other online resources. I've been shooting for abit over a month and in my garden, which sadly only gives me about 8ms, 10 if I stand awkwardly near the fence with a bush half in my way and im at this point pretty consistently groupings arrows tight in the yellow. Im gap shooting for my aiming method rather than pure instinctual. I FEEL like my form is okay, but its really hard to check your self isn't it? Like in a mirror my alignment is straight, my back muscles feel engaged at full draw, I don't get string slap and obviously my actual groups are fine. Until I get someone to actually form check me in person, can I assume that my general accuracy is indicative of good form or is still possible my form is appalling despite this? submitted by /u/Drstrangelove899 [link] ...

Daughter wants a compound bow, what’s a good affordable pick?

My daughter, 10yo, joined the local archery club together with me. They let her try different bows after completing a course and it seems her heart is set on getting a compound. Trouble is, I’m in Europe and the choices, especially for kids, seem to be more limited than in the US. Anyone have options I should be looking at? Keeping in mind she’s 10 so while it should be safe and a bit sturdy top of the line is really not needed yet. Won’t be used for hunting, just target practice and perhaps some 3D shooting. Update: should have added she’s left handed which I guess filters out some options also.. submitted by /u/_tijs [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3p8mNLO via

Things that surprise me about the school archery program

I joined the high school archery nasp program and these are things I’ve been surprised about. 1: they never state of practice if practice is mandatory that night or not: They sent a text this morning saying parent meeting tonight at practice but they didn’t say we had to come. And I’m not coming bc of stomach ache. But I don’t know wether to come stick it out or not bc they didn’t say you hv to. 2: they let you leave early and practice isn’t mandatory unlike other sports: I’m surprised they don’t kick me out bc I leave an hour early in the 2 hour session and I only come 1 day a week out of the 2 days. Or sometimes I don’t come at all depending on how busy I get with life outside school. 78% the reason I’m doing archery is because of this. I quit martial arts bc they required 2 days a week 1 hr session each. 4: no borrowing equipment like genesis bow: They said I can’t bc they need an adequate supply of right hand, left hand bows and they can’t guarantee it would ever come back. IMO...

Trophy images in r/Archery

I’m genuinely interested to see if this is only me, or other peeps here are of the same opinion: I think archery and this subreddit includes a lot more people than just those who bow hunt. I also think that showing off fresh take is not much dissimilar to posting content of accidents and injuries, regardless whether the person is ok or not. My view is that these should be posted with a trigger warning or an NSFW tag. I’d prefer these not to be in the general archery sub at all but as a compromise I’m happy to accept that nsfw can be disabled so it won’t show automatically for those who don’t want to look at it. Bow recommendation

I've had a Mathews Featherlite for 20 years and still love it; however, I realize it can't last forever. It's also a little on the light side with a max draw of 50lbs and I rarely get a pass through when hunting white tail. One of my local shops is closing and has a Mission Blaze that's been in inventory for five years. He is offered it to me for $350. Does anyone have any thoughts about this bow? Hide glue for inserts?

Tried alot of glues for inserts and never been happy for one reason or another. So after sinew backing a bow, I started to wonder about hide glue for inserts. Pros: 1) flexible...at least it flexes fine on sinew backed and composite bows. 2) can be removed with hot water with no damge to the shaft 3) seems to bond well to degreased carbon and fiberglass Cons: 1) susceptible to moisture...I live in a very dry climate, not worried about this 2) dry time...I'm patient and not worried about this either 3) have no idea how it would hold up to repeated impacts. Worth a shot, what do you think? My approach would be apply a sizing coat to both shaft and insert, let that dry, then a freah coat to each at time of glue up. submitted by /u/SmeagolClaus [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/316ijwS via

Arrow fletch direction

I've bought recurve bows, and compound bows. Usually they come with free arrows. My problem is they're fine to shoot with the recurves since the odd colored vanes face out. But on the compound bow it comes with an octane hostage-like rest (3 brushes) and I wonder if it's safe to shoot those arrows through there? I tested a few and they go fine but I suspect the nock orientation is not correct and you're chancing the arrow vanes not get caught between the brushes. I am not able to rotate the nocks, because they're super glued in and when i tried to do that, I destroyed one arrow (the nock gets destroyed). My choices for the compound now is this.. Build my own arrows and make the odd vane point up. Get rid of the octane hostage-like arrow rest and use a drop-away. I am leaving towards option 2 because it's much easier and cheaper for me since I can get cheap arrows for recurves to work with it as well. I've never seen any cheap arrow sets with the odd...

Let's talk arrows

I'm a newbie to archery and I am almost done building my bow but need to know what arrows to purchase with it. I know there are a lot of different styles, materials, etc. to look into. I just want durable arrows. Does draw weight and length of the riser and limbs matter? This is just for target practice, never for hunting. Maybe eventually 3D practice but that will probably come later, if at all. Also for a recurve bow. Need recommendation for barebow plunger, string, arrows etc.

Sitting here about to buy my first bow equippment, barebow style . Some questions: Plunger, which one is recommended? I hear Beiter often being mentioned, though it's quite costly. I can afford one, but is there no other "serious" alternative? Just wanting to know what my options are. Plunger size seems to be a thing, how to pick the correct size? Example: https://www.merlinarchery.co.uk/beiter-button.html String, do I just pick a 68" string for a 68" bow? Simple as that? Arrows: I have no idea except that my drawlength is about 27" from nock to front of riser. I can always cut them down I guess, as I have access to an arrow cutter. I also want arrows that have replacable nocks, like not sure the term, but they fit over like a tiny button at the end? And since stringwalking, I guess I need deep nocks so that they don't pop off the string. I'll add more questions if they arise. Thanks for any help! submitted by /u/Korlian [link] [...

Can you recommend a bow for a 10 yr old beginner?

My son has expressed interest in archery this year so I want to get him a bow for Christmas. I did some googling, but it seems my options are limited to bows for kids under 6 or very expensive bows. I’d rather not spend a ton of money just in case he hates it. I was hoping to spend less than $80 on his first bow. Or do you think thats unrealistic? I’ve been looking at compound bows bc it seems like it would be easier to pull and hold for a kid with not a lot of upper body strength (I could be wrong). He’s not into any other sports or outdoorsy things, so I’m worried about him giving up on archery just bc the bow is hard to pull. So something relatively easy to get the hang of and learn the absolute basics. I don’t mind upgrading to something better very soon if he loves it. submitted by /u/jocelynforreal [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3rfd9tq via

First bow advice for my girlfriend

My girlfriend and I have been looking at bows lately and she’s shot a few and have narrowed down our search to two bows. First one is the Mathews Prima, she really liked how the bow shot and felt however with the model she was shooting she was struggling with the draw weight (38lbs). It had 50lb limbs and that was as low as it went. The bow shop said it can be ordered with 40lb limbs that could get the draw weight down to low 30’s and high 20’s. She was able to get it about an inch back from the let off and barely needed any help getting it there. The other bow is the elite ember, she liked that one as well it’s not quite as smooth as the Mathews but it has a much bigger range for the draw weight and 32lb she was able to shoot consistently and it wasn’t too much for her. With her being new to archery which way would you recommend going? She really liked the way the prima felt in her hand and how it shot just worried about not shooting one with the exact limbs. We want a bow that s...

Where to buy great quality quivers?

Hey, I didn't really know where else to post this. I have a close friend who is getting more into archery. I wanted to buy him a quiver since he only has a little bag for his arrows. Does anyone have a good site/ recommendations on where to get a good quality quiver? From the US, if that helps. I'm sorry I don't know much other information on the types of arrows he carries, but if anyone needs to see the disassembled bow I could send a photo. Thank you for any/all help! <3 Edit: the bow is called an English Longbow submitted by /u/SheogorathsWabbajack [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3lbWyTu via
