First recurve bow

I stumbled across a 1953 Bear Kodiak hunter on CL. My first recurve bow. Going to take it to the local shop to be restrung. Paid 140 for bow, quiver and 6 arrows with field tips. There is a worn spot on the riser just above the grip. What do y'all think? Southwest Archery Spyder Recurve for Competition?

I'm thirteen (male) and I'm looking for a good wooden recurve bow. About a year ago I shot for a couple months as a beginner at my local club/range, but I had to take a break. I'm looking to get back into archery but I can't rejoin the club anytime soon because of COVID19. So I am looking for a recurve bow I can shoot with in my backyard for the meantime, and i would like one that lasts so I can eventually use it at my club if i decide to join again. I am interested in the Southwest Archery Spyder 62 inch. I would get a 25lb bow to begin with. (My draw length is shorter than the actual draw length of the bow so hopefully 25lb bow will feel like 20lb for me). I will purchase replacement limbs when i need to upgrade my draw weight. My question: can a wooden recurve bow like the SWA Spyder be used for modern target competitions? (The bow has screw holes for stabilizer, sight, rest etc. ) Even though i am still unsure whether i will take the competitive archery route, i

XL limbs for Sage?

Hi all, I have a 62" Samick Sage (as they all are) that I got at a ridiculously low price. Couldn't say no. However, as I'm 6' tall and have a 28.5" draw, I need a bigger set-up. Are there limbs for a Sage that are XL? Or am I screwed and just need to start over looking for a 68"? I'm hoping that I can find a pair of inexpensive limbs, as I've only recently started shooting and I'd rather not have to start from scratch again. submitted by /u/jws91206 [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/38nKbfu via

Do I need a longer string? My brace height seems too high (27cm). Riser is from a 60" Samick SHT, limbs 70" Black Sheep Apollo. Bow length is 66" and the current string is for a 66" bow.

Resources to learn to shoot a bow

I was given an old PSE thunderflite and I had it looked over by an archery shop and they set me up with a rest, sight, release, and arrows. I’m now ready to start learning to shoot it. I’ve seen a few videos on YouTube but there’s a lot of differences so I’m wondering who the “good instructors “ out there are. Any suggestions on things to read or watch to help me learn would be greatly appreciated! submitted by /u/YoureGatorBait [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/38hMbWE via

Trying to order a bow, but it is talking about limb weight and I don’t understand what that means exactly

So I’m ordering a takedown recurve bow and they are asking what limb weight I want. I know what the limbs of the bow are but I am unsure what the effect of the weight is. Is the weight of the limbs connected to draw weight?? submitted by /u/snailcircus [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/2NEYS4e via

Barebow League: Accessorize my Sage, or save for a better bow?

My shop runs a casual weekly league, split between compounds and recurves with some minor divisions for AAP events. I took lessons for a couple months, am now practicing a few times a week with a 25 pound Sage. I'm looking to stay Barebow long-term, but looking at my stock bow, I have a split path here. Do I pick up weights, a plunger, etc that is in-budget for an entry level bow and have fun with it? Or do I leave my Sage as a casual loaner bow, and save every cent for a 'real' target bow albeit the cheapest one possible? It comes down to 'do I go play now' after a couple shipments arrive, or do I save longer term for a competitive bow? submitted by /u/Highwayman1717 [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/31vOdAV via

Question about shooting form

Somewhat newbie here. A few years ago, I took a class in college with a recurve after not shooting a bow in many years and rediscovered how much I enjoy shooting bows. I was wondering if there is any difference in form when shooting a recurve vs compound other than the anchor point since I have a new hunting compound bow coming in soon. submitted by /u/Primary-Space [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/2CSKNOl via

Peep keeps coming out

I've had this bow for a couple of years and shoot it semi-frequently. It has a peep with a silicon tube. Recently when shooting it the peep pulled out of the string, seemingly after being fired. I have checked and the tube is not very tight at full draw, certainly not tight enough to pull the peep out. I got it put back in the string and the same thing happened a few shots later. Do I just need to go to a tubeless peep? I'm not very knowledgeable with bows and don't really understand why it is failing all of the sudden. I previously used this same peep for hundreds and hundreds of shots with no failures. submitted by /u/BlasterfieldChester [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3g7rW0c via

Nocks are too tight

Now that my new limbs match the spine value of my arrows I am getting into optimizing my gear bit by bit. One thing that I would like to improve is the tightness of the nocks on the string, since currently my arrows really clamp onto the string. My first thought was to exchange the nocks, but my arrows are Aurel Mako spine 600 arrows, and these are sold ready made, so I don't know what kind of glue they use for the nocks. I am not sure if they are supposed to be exchangeable. Also from the table on their homepage it seems that the spine 600 arrows already use a large nock ("same as G-Nock 0,098″"), so I don't think that there are larger nocks for this kind of arrow. So do you have any suggestions what I should do? Might it be sufficient to redo the serving with a different material? Should I get a new string? If I remember correctly I am currently using a BCY8125G 18 strand string. submitted by /u/warlaan [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Arch

Want to get my first bow, draw weight recc? I've been using one way too heavy and big for me.

I'm 5'5 and about 115lbs. Really want to buy my own recurve and am between a 20-25lb one.. I have been practicing using my roommates since april, but it's much too large for me...35lbs. I could barely do it in the beginning, but have gotten a bit stronger and gotten better aim. But it's still too much for me, and I'm eager to get my own now. Is a 62 Lb PSE Fire-Flite compound good for a beginner?

I've shot a half dozen times or so in the past on a lightweight compound (20-30 pounds I think). I just found a PSE fire-flite compound that's set at 62 lbs. I know I should have this lowered as a beginner, but the price seems nice. $50 with case, arrows, and accessories. I don't plan on using this for hunting. What's a reasonable price for a shop to lower weight and adjust draw length if needed/possible? Would this make a good starter bow after taking to a shop? submitted by /u/drumsripdrummer [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/2ZgkaKV via

Reputable, quality brands?

I'm a mostly traditional recurve archer. I currently use a 62" 35lb draw Spirit Takedown recurve and I'm well past the point of needing a larger draw weight. I'm looking to spend under $200 on a quality recurve bow with 60" or 62" (Not sure which would suit me best) 40-45lb draw at a 28 inch draw length (give or take, I did the wingspan method to find to draw length) Which brands have the smoothest draw? Which are the most recommended? Any and all answers are greatly appreciated! submitted by /u/nate_oi [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3dIMWJ4 via

Standard Archery competitions.

What is the standard distance to target? Type of bow? Draw weight? That you would use in a competition? I really enjoy shooting my compound in my back yard, I usually shoot 40-50 yards (awful arrow grouping but I’m getting better). About to try out the Motive F5 fiber foam limbs

I am super excited! Yesterday I received my new limbs in the mail. I had been shooting cheap rented wood limbs for some time and felt that it was time to get stronger limbs. I checked some posts and price lists and decided to go with the fiber foam limbs from WNS, the Motive F5. I didn't really know what weight to pick, but since I had been shooting 26# limbs tillered up to 30# I decided to take 36# limbs. The rationale behind that was that the foam limbs are said to be quite smooth, so going up 6# instead of 4# like I did before should be fine. I also felt that with my strength training my current limbs were too weak, which also in my mind justified the 6# increase. I didn't have time to shoot the new limbs yesterday, but I did a quick draw test and my worries switched from too heavy to too light - it felt like the new limbs tillered all the way to the light side were basically the same as what I had before. So I took out my luggage scale (which doesn't seem to be to ac

Stan PerfeX Resistance Release Issues

Hey all. Recently bought the Stan PerfeX Longneck XL Resistance Release. I've tried setting it up to the perfect poundage that I like. For some reason, after shooting 3-5 arrows, the tension changes. I set it to fairly cold/hot (middle) and after I shoot those few arrows, the tension loosens. To the point where as soon as I let off of the thumb peg/safety it fires. If i can get it consistant with those first few shots, man this is the perfect release. I am thinking of returning it and switching to the Thumb version instead. Does anyone have any ideas?
