Thumb drawers/trad composite, how do you know where your hand and the nock is supposed to go?

Hi, I have recently started the jump from recurve to composite, but sadly there is no/very few people who use this style around where I live, most of the trad guys just have longbows. So any advice/tips on how to do things correctly, what to expect and not break something expensive would be greatly appreciated
