Beginner Needing Help

So I want to get into archery as I like the skill behind it. I want to shoot recurves since they seem like the more do it yourself type of bow. I’ve heard you can destring and work on recurves whereas compounds require more tuning with machines since there are moving parts. With that in mind what bow would you fine folk recommend for me to get and use. For price range I was thinking a couple hundred bucks but no more than 400-500. submitted by /u/funkymacaco [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3oMBKlp via

Target compound vs. hunting compound

As the post says Im debating between the two and am hoping for some insight. I am inherently more drawn to the hunting bows though it is very unlikely I will hunt with it (but not impossible). I will mainly be doing outdoor target archery. I think it would be fun to try to do some competitions as I get better (there are many that happen around me). Are both types of bows usually allowed in the same competitions? Are there limitations I may not realize to getting one over the other. I just want to get all the facts so I don’t spend a large amount of money and wish I had gotten the other. submitted by /u/frillfin [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3oLBVOc via

Need help with an Oneida bow

Looking to buy a Kestrel or Phoenix, but I'm abroad atm and there's a lot of counterfeit Oneidas around. I've heard Oneida bows have their serial number beneath the handle. Aside from that, is there any way to verify an Oneida is legit? (Would also be super helpful if any of y'all got a picture of what the serial should look like). Thanks! Btw, I've also sent a message to Oneida, though they haven't replied me back yet. submitted by /u/OrdinaryAntique9591 [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3mJKpDF via

Getting into target compound, need help!

I am getting into target compound archery as an intermediate level archer, and looking for suggestions on what’s the easiest way to kit out a bow at a reasonable price to performance to both improve with and something that I could take to local competitions until I upgrade things as I get better. I know stabilizers like doinker are name brand, but it’s hard as someone who is just getting serious about archery to know if there are alternatives. Sights- it seems most people go single pin sites with adjustable rails, I’ve seen shrewd as a brand that keeps coming up. Do target sights have minor magnification usually? Arrows— I’ve mostly been shooting Easton x7s with 100 grain target tips, is that the norm? It was based on a friend’s recommendation. Poundage on bows — I’ve seen this be something debated over, my bow has a 45-55 lb limb setup, is that too slow for target bows? Sorry for the lack of knowledge, my local clubs have been less responsive with covid so a lot Of times I am sh...

I promised updates so here ya go! Your friendly blacksmith back again with 4 more arrowheads. Still lots to improve but they're 100x better than the last group :) Avg weight is 265 grains!

HELP noob has questions (kinda long)

I am not completely new to archery (maybe a few hundred shots a few years ago and a few recently) but that was with compound. And its time I BUY a bow. I've never bought one before (only gifted) and I am having trouble deciding I know there are a lot of these posts but I just have a few questions and would like suggestions because I have been doing SO MUCH research and I always prefer to hear what real people say for comparison. Every manufacturer goes "good bow. Lots of power." And the reviews are all basically the same for all of them So whats the difference? If I get a $5-600 bow is it noticeably better than a <$200 bow? It seems like every bow is either a "beginner" for $150 or its "pro Olympic" at like over 700, I just don't know how much to spend. Before you ask I'll tell you what I'm planning in doing with it, I'm going to mostly be doing target practice and when I'm ready I want to be able to hunt with it in the future...

I removed the vaines from a cheap carbon shaft. Is it still safe to shoot?

The vaines came out with what looks like some carbon strips still attached to the bottom. I flexed the shaft and it dosen't make any weird noises. Hoyt Klash

Hi all, I've been shooting the PSE Stinger X for two years now and I'm ready for an upgrade. I have all the necessary add-ons so I'm looking for a slightly better bow that I can buy bare. The Hoyt Klash seems to be a good bow. Entry level but still seems like an upgrade in quality from the bow I'm shooting now. The main purpose will be for hunting and target shooting to improve at hunting. I've seen multiple reviews that label it as a 'kids' bow. At my 29" draw length I can max it out to #70 draw weight which would be plenty for deer, I think it's 300 fps. I'm looking for a second opinion and maybe possible alternatives in the same price range. I'm 28yr old 5'11 male. Currently shooting at #60 but working my way up. Is a compound bow similar to a firearm?

I like shooting with firearms, especially handguns, and I am looking to try archery with my mother who is already in the sport, albeit a beginner herself. I tried archery with an olympic bow and a sight before, hated it. I just don't like "guessing" where the arrow might hit. So I thought about a compound bow, as 2 aiming points and a trigger release might feel more familiar to me. Plus, you don't have to buy cartridges for a bow (providing you don't lose or break any arrows). What do you guys think? is a compound for me or is archery just not for me? Another thing I don't like about archery is the inherent slowness of arrows, so does a higher poundage make a noticeable affect on the arrow? fyi right now I have a 30 lb bow, and my draw length adds about 8 lb. submitted by /u/Astaziel [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/31WAUJ2 via

Target Panic Advise

So I've been shooting for about 6 years and sort of developed really bad target panic 2 years ago. I'm not too fussed about looking bad at my club or not being able to compete anymore - but I'm starting to lose patience a little bit and wondered if anyone who's overcome target panic had any tips that helped them or a rough timeframe of how long it took them to get back to normal? I have faith I'll keep shooting and won't give up but it'd be nice to know if there's any real tips or tricks (Blind shooting is the only thing I've found helps so far?) submitted by /u/kachwezi [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/35Qcr9x via

[KTB] Is this amount of bow flex unsafe?

I just bought a 50" Kaya KTB to hold me over until my Mariner arrives. My draw length is a little over 32"; I thought that korean bows would be able to accommodate that, but when I'm close to full draw I get a crazy amount of stacking and the bow limbs are parallel with the ground . Recurve help

I have been a serious archer for about about 25 years now, but I have never shot anything other than compound. I would like to get into recurve (just target shooting for fun, I don’t have any interest in hunting with it). The prob is there aren’t any shops around me that sell them, so I am thinking of ordering online. Is there anyway to reliably tell my specs from my compound bows, or is it a completely different animal? (I shoot my compounds with a thumb release if that helps at all) Also, any recommendations for a good bow option for that purpose would be great! submitted by /u/Turtlew27 [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/2GjsOms via

What size of beginner bow for an adult woman?

Hi! I am choosing between Ragim Wild Cat and Ragim Matrix but I struggle with the sizing. And because there is a lockdown in my country (and most likely will be for a long time) I have no possibility to try it anywhere. I am 175 cm (5'9) height, around 65-70 kg (150 lbs) weight. My draw lenght is between 27-28 inches (closer to 28) so I am deciding between the size of a bow 66 or 68 but don't know which would be a better fit. And then of course the draw weight. I don't do any sports beside the long walks with my dog. The articles on the Internet usually recommend for beginners around 25 lbs. Is it to much? 22 lbs would be a better choice? Thank you! submitted by /u/Vanilora [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3mvTNui via

How to paint decorations on bows?

Anyone here have experience painting on bows? Such as this? http://nawalny-bows.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/ssss.jpg http://nawalny-bows.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/b.jpg I would think since the bow bends so much the paint would eventually crack and separate and flake off. Bow storage method

Hey guys! So for context I shoot with an olympic recurve, and recently I was lucky enough to get a full-sized (~2m high) locker at my club to store my gear. Up until now I had to bring everything from home each time, stored nearly in my bow bag, then take 5-10 min to unpack everything and set up the bow before being able to start shooting. So having that locker is a blessing. Now I was wondering, because of its size I could technically be able to store my bow unstrung in it standing up, only removing the sight, stabilizers and plunger. But would that be safe for the bow in the long term? I'm worried that having the weight of the bow pressing down on one limb all the time might not be good, and will affect the performance after some time. I usually come to shoot at least once a week, but I'm still wondering if that could be an issue. Would it be safer to fully disassemble it each time before storing it? How do you guys usually store your bow when you're not using it? s...

Which target for broadheads?

I’m a new hunter learning archery on a compound bow. I began in July and am going to an indoor range since I’m not legally allowed to shoot in my backyard. I need advice on a new bow.

I have been using a Bear Advantage Hunter which was given to me during spring. This is the first bow I have ever owned. I have been shooting it 4 times a week since May. I killed my first deer two weeks ago with this bow. I feel pretty confident in my consistency and accuracy. I tried to find info on this bow but all I found was that it was made exclusively for walmart. Long story short, I decided to upgrade today and I bought a Bear Moment #70 used. I believe this bow is much faster (340 fps) and it will be tuned to 10 lbs heavier draw weight (70lbs). My draw length is 29 inches. My main question is about spine and point weight. From reading online it seems like I need 300 spine but how do the tip weights change things? Do I get more kinetic energy from a heavier field point? More penetration with my broadhead? Is there any advantage to hurling more mass down range or is it all about tuning tips to arrows to make them fly correctly? submitted by /u/twinkledinx [link] [comme...

Looking to purchase a recurve now for myself and girlfriend.

Edit: meant to say recurve bow not now! Lol So me and my girlfriend are looking into getting into archery a bit in our free time, we have a pretty significant height difference, I’m 6 3” she is 5 2”, I understand height and length of bow is a big part of it so I was wondering if there might be a sweet spot or a in between lengths where we can both use the bow and have a fun time shooting targets and what not. If it’s a bit nonsensical for us to share a bow lemme know, I just figured if there would be a way for both of us to share one I would ask. Need help with tuning my broadheads

Hi, I'm trying to get my broadheads tuned so I can join along with my dad with deer hunting however, I'm not really sure what to do next. A local bow shop paper-tuned my rest already I shoot Carbon Express Terminator Hunter 350 spine arrows, 30 inches long with no changes made to them from Wal-Mart. My draw length is 26 inches if that matters The broadhead I use is Magnus Stinger 100 grains. The rest I use is a Trophy Ridge Whisker Biscuit. Bamboo arrow questions

I finally received my bamboo arrow shafts today and I am trying to figure out how to make it all work. I ordered 33" shafts but they sent me 38" so easy enough to cut them down but then comes the question of self nock or glue on. Which one would you recommend? And how about the tips. The shafts for the most part are a consistent 5/16" on the thick end. Glue on would be the easiest but I have read about people using screw in tips but I must be missing something as I am having trouble picturing it. I've sacrificed a few arrow shafts already trying to drill out the end to fit the diameter of the inner shaft before the threads. I cant get a consistent measurement as I no longer have a micrometer. It keeps breaking and I just need some help please. submitted by /u/PlaidAvacado [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/37W62fT via

Question for Satori owners - stacking in your experience?

I recently had the great pleasure of shooting a friend's 21" Tiburon with short Trad limbs (so a total 62 AMO) and while at 45 lbs it was a bit overbowed for me I noticed less stacking than with other hunting-style ILF bows of the same size. Which is surprising given the short limbs! By the end of it, I didn't feel like I had just shot several ends with a 45 lb bow, which for me would typically stack to 47+ lbs. I don't know how much of that is due to the Formula system, or the quality of the limbs, or the geometry of the riser. Probably a combo of some sort I would presuppose. Assuming a Formula hunting rig is out of reach due to availability, I have some specific Qs about the Satori that I can't seem to find addressed in reviews. If you have a long draw, what is your experience with stacking between a Hoyt 19" or 21" riser versus other risers? How about the limbs, do they feel more linear on one riser or another? If you have also tried the earlier...

I am a novice shooter and I have noticed that there are many budget bows that have draw weights from 15-70 lbs or so. Howdy my friends, I need help choosing arrow grain.

Hello folks, I went to sportsmans wearhouse and I can't really get an answer out of anyone. I asked what they would recommend for my bow that's maxed out at 60lbs (elite ember) and they just said "it's personal preference" which I understand. But I told them I want to start getting ready for elk season next year and don't know what arrows to get and nobody really gives me a direct answer so I'm lost. Some people say 350's, some say higher, however when I ask why I should go with those, they don't ever really give me an answer. I'm newer to archery and don't know a lot about arrow grains or what is better for what. Any tips/books/etc. for head position when anchoring/drawing? I always seem to move my head slightly (from starting set position to set up to anchoring...), and can’t seem to keep it consistent between arrows.

If I have my head in a neutral position, I seem to have to move my head to my string/anchor, which I know is incorrect. If I start in a “better” position, I still ultimately end up shifting my head to the same “feel” on my face/in anchor, but again, that’s not ideal... Many thanks in advance!!! submitted by /u/TheaPosts [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3jsW5bK via

They did restring it, but did not have the right kind of arrows. The guy wrote down 27/12 Diameter/Thickness on a card and said they're expensive. His birthday is next week and I am looking on Amazon and having trouble determining what 27/12 means as far as looking them up. Can someone be so kind as to show me which kind of arrows I need to buy, and also tips (I'm sure that's the wrong word) if necessary? For now: he will just be shooting a target so I do not think that he needs anything fancy. I want to get into this community!

Throughout my childhood whenever I went to summer camp I always looked forward to the archery. Im now 15 almost 16 and want to get into archery/hunting. I want to one, learn how to to properly shoot a compund bow and two, get an idea of when I should invest in a compund bow. It needs to be designed for beginners and that is less that 300$. Any advise? submitted by /u/ZukiTheOtaku [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/37P2ewH via

First shot was above the center bullseye to the right, adjusted the sights and then the rest is pretty good. I freaking love archery.

Arrows?

Hey folks! I'm getting an english longbow (50lb/28", 60lb/32"), and I had a curiosity about arrows. I've heard that english longbows are happiest with wood arrows/feather fletching, but I'm having a hard time finding good info on the subject. Loud take down recurve

I noticed that my recurve bow is quite loud compared to others. I already tried to increase the space between the riser and the bowstring. That didn’t rly change anything. What else might be the issue? submitted by /u/Lemeeow97 [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/2Ts7cXW via

Greetings all, total newbie questions

Morning to all! While I`ve been interested in Archery for a long time, my country doesn´t really offer a lot of options when it comes to clubs, information, equipment or just having someone in the know who can give advice. I´ve wanted to get into it for a long time, years really, but never had a. the chance to REALLY go for it, nor b. a nearby source of info or advice. Myself (48), Wife (42) and oldest (14) are interested in picking this up. We are absolute newbies, never having a bow in hour hands even. In your collective opinion and since "a local club" exists here but is very limited both in accesss (pandemic) and information, could you helps us by pointing to the very best resources online to educate ourselves about the sport, equipment and the sort? we are not natural english speakers but we all have a fairly good understanding of the language so it`s ok if all/most resources are in english. I`ve also no problem on reading/watching videos /exercising for a long time ...

When you don't have the distance, try making the target smaller. Aim small, miss small, this is at about 8 yards in my basement. When aiming I honestly could barely see the dot. I made the dots on my target a little bigger (maybe a little bigger than the diameter of the shaft)

Hoyt Helix New Strings / Changing with out Press

I need to change the strings on my Hoyt Helix and there are no Archery shops in a 50 mile radius that can change the strings in less than 2.5 weeks so all of my planned hunts are essentially canceled if I cant get this done at home. Questions: #1) What is the best online resource to get decent strings for a Hoyt Helix - 30" draw length? #2) Has anyone changed the strings on a Hoyt Helix without a bow press? I'm aware that DIY changing strings is not recommended and will probably void the warranty which I'm not concerned with. I'm not being cheap I just don't want to miss all hunting this season. submitted by /u/ChopperNYC [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/2TtcOkO via

Right hand Mediterranean on a recurve

Okay so I was just wondering, it’s my 3rd day shooting and I’ve been doing around 5 hours + every day and have started to get consistent with 65% of my shots. Initially I just started with right hand Mediterranean Bc that felt natural until I saw online that it’s wrong? So I just started thumb drawing and did it for one day. But my question is, why can’t I use Mediterranean on right side??? Bc I don’t see why I can’t get accurate and consistent with this method. submitted by /u/koscar661 [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3msFAhT via

So my instructor gave me an exercise to do..

For context, I bought a 35lb traditional 'horsebow' before starting my archery lessons at a mainly Target recurve club. I've been doing lessons for about 6 weeks, and I'm pretty excited to bring my equipment in (which we do at 10 weeks) Anyway, I told my instructor about it and he just kind of scoffed at me, and said that I can't handle 35lbs (Which I've felt okay with when shooting at home. Albeit I don't shoot for more than an hour at a time). He said to pull the bow to full draw and hold it for 1 minute without shaking. And to do it about 12+ times per 'session'. Is this a legit way of training, or is he just trying to make fun of me? submitted by /u/Rekaigan [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/2J8dI4f via

Target recommendations?

Looking for a good target, I’ve had plenty of bags, not really a fan. I’ve also had a block, pretty good. Looking for something similar to the block. Currently I’m shooting arrows with tapered inserts, so if the targets too firm, I may loose some inserts. Secondly, I’m also open to arrow suggestions. Currently I’m shooting black eagle 300 spine. Having issues with the tapered inserts. They don’t seem secure, issues indexing broadheads, and overall just not confident in them. Draw Length Question

Could one of you check my video and see if my draw length is correct? I switched from a index release to a thumb release and now everything just feels different. Sometimes it feels the string is just right and sometimes it feels too short. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXgepL7IbQM&feature=youtu.be submitted by /u/BigBoyTooFat [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3kAmt52 via

Two questions for the audience.

Good afternoon guys. I have a couple questions for everyone. The first one is, I have a Cartel Fantom riser in a very bland silver. I bought it used so I didn’t have a color choice. I was wondering if there are any drawbacks to repainting it. And if not if any one has done it before and how they did it. The second is regarding my sight. It’s a typical T style sight. The aperture of it is tiny. So I went looking to get a bigger on. And the all are like that no matter the sight. And replacements that are larger are all for compound bows, usually including some sort of magnification. I like the size though. Is there a reason not to use one if those with just a non magnified lens? submitted by /u/Tim1971 [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/37EPgBJ via

Draw Length

Can you guys help me with my draw length? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXgepL7IbQM&ab_channel=EdSu I switched from tuff guy index release to carter wise guy and the only anchor point i'm been using is making sure my hand touches my ear and string touches corner of my mouth. I was told to use my jaw bone as anchor but I think the string is too long for that. Should I get the string lowered to 27.5 from 28"? submitted by /u/HashtagEdward [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/2TlRGwE via

Bloodsport 350 spine too stiff?

Hello all . I recently got into archery and I picked up a set of Bloodsport Hunter 7.9 gpi arrow shafts with vanes. I shoot a Southwest takedown recurve at 45 lbs with 150 grain field tips. Different calculators tell me different things the general consensus seems to be four to five hundred spine is optimal. My question is are these arrows okay or would I be better off going with a higher spine? submitted by /u/ChaoticDendrite [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/31GyRIW via

Starting out with a 33" draw length

So I've recently been bit pretty badly by the bug, but I am both exceptionally tall and exceptionally lanky, and as a result have a 33" draw length, which is giving me issues. The rental equipment at my local range all stopped at about 28 inches of draw. I had a great time, but the compounds deeply awkward to use with the short draw length and the recurve I have been using (and loving) is pinching and I'm getting what I'm told is way more numbness in my fingers than I should be. The research I've done says I need a 27 or 29 inch riser with long limbs, but that same research is also telling me that's going to cost way more than I'd like starting out in a hobby. Is there any kind of budget option at my size? Is there a way to set up a 70" bow like the galaxy aspire to do less pinching until I make a decision about plopping down close to a thousand dollars on a 29" riser? Are there cheap risers in the 27" or 29" size? Thanks! submitt...
