So I'm trying to get some arrows flying right for deer season. Tried some xx75 camo hunters, they were the best I've shot so far but bent a few so I went back to carbons, Easton Axis specifically. Bought some 340s that shot well but couldn't get the weight up to 10gpp so I purchased some 300s and 75 inserts to play with, and now I have them flying consistently out to 18m but my arrow specs and center shot don't align with conventional wisdom
Bow specs
- 19" Gillo riser
- Long W&W Black Wolf limbs
- Spigarelli ZT Rest
- Shibuya DX Plunger w/ medium spring and tension
- 57# at 30 1/4" draw
- 7 3/4" brace height
- even tiller, shooting 3 under
- 1/2" nock height
My arrows are finally shooting well at 582 grains, 10.1 gpp, 15% foc, and 184 fps
- 32" long
- 75-grain inserts
- 125-grain field points
- 20-grain wraps
- 3 fletched 4" trad vanes
According to Stu Miller's calculator that should be way too stiff but I figured I would start here and use point weight to get close and adjust the rest by cutting the shaft.
SHOCKINGLY these arrows are consistently showing weak at full length by always landing to the right and having the nock kicking severely to the left. Video confirms the arrow is weak during flight too. So I cut 1/2" off the rear end to stiffen it and now it's flying well.
Next was the center shot, arrows were consistently inconsistent even though I was executing my shot well. Back tension, minimal plucking, clean release; again I watched it on the video to confirm. So I started playing with my plunger, screwed it so the button would depress flush to the riser, and shot a group from close range, wildly poor flight.
I essentially would shoot 3 fletched and 3 bare-shaft arrows twice to determine consistent groups and then adjust the plunger one full turn, I could actually see my arrows grouping tighter and moving left as I adjusted my plunger which was a good sign.
Finally, I am now grouping my arrows into a 2" circle at 18m. I put my bow down and reshot it the next day with similar results. Any misses were my fault, not the gear. I go to check my center shot which I have always read should be close to having the inner edge of the field point next to the outer edge of the string, not even close.
There is almost 5mm between the inner edge of my point and the outer edge of my string. Is is the extra length of my arrow which could be affecting the traditional alignment?
I've tried playing with point weights from 85 to 200 grains. As I increased the point weight the arrows would fly worse and as I decreased it I could watch them stiffen up.
Am I missing something here, everything I've learned in tuning seems to have been thrown out the window when I started to shoot these arrows.
TL;DR - New arrows should be shooting way to stiff, they're shooting weak. Center-shot isn't even close to conventional theory.
