Got to shoot Total Archery Challenge today. This was one of the shots off a cliff. 35 yard shot at almost 60 degrees. Had to shoot for 18 yards to hit the target.

twisting a limb from stringing a recurve with the step-through method-- real or overexaggerated?

Ok I just got downvoted in another thread for suggesting that someone use a step-through method to unstring a recurve. I've heard all over the place that using the step-through method can twist a bow limb. But I own an old vintage stemmler recurve that was probably made in the 60s or 70s, and I've been step-through stringing and unstringing it since the 90s and the limbs remain straight as an arrow. I don't really see how I could twist a limb, as I make sure to line up my limbs and bend them straight. I can even string it while sitting down. Furthermore, archers have been using variants of the step-through method to string their bows for millennia. Is it really so bad to use the step-through method? Are bow-stringers possibly just another way for archery companies to sell you something you don't need? I can see a bow-stringer might be nice for a beginner, since the step-through method can take a little bit of time get used to, but once you are able to do it, I feel l...

I just discovered wearing a cloth mask while shooting eliminates the need to band-aid or tape my nose (Barebow shooting using string-walking).

I haven't gone to an indoor shooting competition since Feb 2020 and I skipped the 2021 indoor season even though I was vaccinated (Part of the Pfizer vaccine study) back in October 2020. I very badly want to do the indoor season this year (OAA and NFAA Indoor nationals), but now that COVID cases are back up, that makes things a little uncertain. If I do end up going to the next indoor competitions coming up this winter, I wanted to make sure I could adjust to shooting with a mask. To my surprise, I found that a mask has a HUGE benefit to my shooting because I no longer have to tape up or band-aid my nose. If you don't know what I mean, youtube a John Demmer III shoot. I do the same thing he does - protects his nose with a covering. A few barebow shooters just lightly scrape a part of their face (usually the nose) and after about 10-20 arrows, it will literally start to bleed because of the cumulative friction. Sometimes it's the nock and usually it's the string. Wearin...

A question about mechanical release effects on performance.

Just a little background: I grew up shooting traditional, I started learning to shoota compound bow with sights and release about four years ago and started hunting two years ago. Now my whole time shooting a compound bow I've been using this release I dont remember where I got it or the brand, just that I paid 10 dollars for it. I get okay-ish groups out to 30-40 yards, at least enough that I'm confident to take a shot on a deer out to 30. Now that I've spent some time getting more consistent with my form, my question is would a better release help increase my accuracy? I see releases on amazon/cabelas for $100-$200, is there a point of diminishing returns on these when it comes to price:performance? I mean, I like mine, its comfortable and it works, and its held up for four years so its pretty sturdy. But I want to give myself every advantage in becoming more consistent. Not looking for a "magic bullet" purchase to make me a world class archer, just wondering...

Advice on first compound bow

So I went to an archery store near me and narrowed it down to two bows https://www.beararchery.com/products/bear-whitetail-legend-compound-bow?variant=38019874980000 For $479 as a package with the sight whisker biscuit 6" stabilizer Peep sight Or https://missionarchery.com/bows/mxr/ For $499 with nothing else I added up the accessories for a total of about 260 so around 770 It does seem like the mission on is a fair amount nicer obviously I would be getting at least slightly better accessories as well. I guess the main difference in the bows is single vs dual cam. Not really sure what to do. Want to use it for hunting and target shooting brand new to archery. Any advice would be awesome! submitted by /u/SmartM0nk3y [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/378F5E5 via

One Eye open…

I have been shooting instinctively for a year now. I have trouble getting a clear sight picture with both eyes open. So, for fun, I decided to close my left eye. I am now getting a very clear picture of the arrow tip and I a learning to use arrow tip to calculate elevation. But: at 50m my shots are about 6 inches left. Is that the effect of parallax? Looking for New ILF Limbs

Hello, currently in shooting a HOYT satori with stock limbs. Any suggestions for better options? I mostly just doing barebow traditional range/3D shoots with the occasional blunt/judo roving. I’ve been looking at: TRADTECH BLACK MAX 2.0 CARBON/WOOD RECURVE LIMBS UUKHA SX50 ILF RECURVE LIMBS (finding 40lbs Medium though has been impossible for me) UUKHA SX80 ILF RECURVE LIMBS (not sure if the price is worth it over the above two) submitted by /u/Fuse2005 [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3zYJplJ via

First Competition, what to expect?

I'm going to my first outdoor competition which says the format will be a double 72 (Single Distance) round. (Olympic recurve) I'm a little nervous that my bow/arrow choice won't be able to make it the full distance. But I really wanted to compete and this was the only option for me. For reference, I shoot 36lb WNS limbs and have a draw length a little longer than 28 inches. Arrows are Easton apollos (Spine 760) I don't know what a Double 72 (Single Distance) round is or what to expect or what distance I'm shooting at. Probably a dumb thing to register and not know but again, my options are very limited where I am. I also don't know what I should do if I find that my arrows can't make it the full distance. submitted by /u/TheManCalledBlackCat [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3iYlJGY via

Young kid interested in archery - cross dominance

I don't know much about archery, but my five-year old daughter has been really keen on it. She has a play bow right now (from https://twobrosbows.com/collections ) and keeps expressing interest in doing real archery when she gets a bit older (or even just a more realistic toy bow right now). One thing I figured out pretty quickly is that she's dominant with her left-eye but right-handed. It sounds like this is "sticky" (doesn't change on its own)? Right now she's pulling with her left hand, but I'm wondering if I should get her to play practice pulling with her right hand so eventually she doesn't have to unlearn any muscle memory? Thoughts? Maybe it's just too early to matter? submitted by /u/itsthelee [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3lec2qP via

Recurve bow "fell of the back of a lorry" what else do I need to start archer-ing?

I was doing some work for a removals company, loading and unloading lorries for a college that was moving buildings. They were chucking out loads of things, not limited to (I shit you not I also picked up 3 iMacs, and two javelins, a ping pong set and a load of filing cabinets) - but including this recurve bow . Beyond a very small amount of messing around with a fibreglass bow my father got me as a child, I have no idea about archery, but I'd love to start. I have a farm, so have plenty of space to practice. Any info about the bow is welcome, I'm guessing it is a fairly cheap entry level bow. Is this bow complete? What else do I need to start? Planning on taking my recurve with me on a month-long trip across the U.S

Still somewhat of an amateur here. I'll be bringing along my Bear Kodiak Magnum with me on my roadtrip and plan on hitting up ranges in different states. A bow for a beginner.

I have literally tried archery once and I found it amazingly peaceful. Now I'd like to buy myself a bow and arrows to shoot down the yard at targets to wind down after work. I have a lot on so I really can't be arsed to research in to what makes a better bow etc. Sorry for laziness. I'm not really interested in absolute best performance, just a satisfying shot. Maybe a traditional wood one or a nice looking metal recurve. Also arrows. Cartel fantom limb weight not accurate

So both me and my wife just got our first target recurves and got 36lbs and 20lbs limbs respectively. After putting them on the risers (WNS Explorer DX 25") we noticed they felt kinds heavy. I loosend the limb bolts off as much as possible within spec and measured the draw weights. Mine ended up 37lbs @28" and hers 22lbs @28". So it seams these libs are actually in the range of 40lbs and 25lbs. Is this a common problem with these limbs or did someone at the factory label ours wrong? We can still shoot them fine but we're a little over bowed now so not ideal submitted by /u/Juicys-Fruits [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3yg277Y via

Thoughts/Recommendations on Beginner setup

Hello Everyone. I’ve been looking at getting into Archery for a while and finally decided to pull the trigger. Been reading up on a lot of things for beginners, including the “first bow” posts on here. I want to use a recurve, primarily for target shooting as a hobby, and maybe eventually using it to hunt (never been, but my uncle has been bugging me to go with him for a while). I initially thought about getting one of the basic beginner recurves like the Samick Sage, but decided to get a little more advanced one that will last longer. Here’s what I plan on getting, and just looking for any comments or recommendations on other options, if there is anything I should avoid on here, or if there is anything additional I need to get to start. good idea to use different anchors for gap shooting, to get more point-on distances?

I'm shooting an old wood-fiberglass recurve with no sites. Gap shooting for my aiming method. I've noticed that if I anchor at the corner of my mouth with a 3-under grip, my point-on distance is about 25-30 yards. If I anchor below my chin with the string touching the front of my nose (sort of olympic style), my point-on distance goes to about 40 yards, with 3-under grip. Then, if I anchor this same way, but use a split finger grip, my point-on distance bumps up to 50 yards! It feels pretty nice to have different point-on distances from 25 to 50 yards that I can use. It makes my gaps smaller in the between distances. It's really just two different anchor points, but for the olympic style anchor I switch between 3 under and split. Do you think this is a good idea, or is it going to hurt me in the long run to be switching anchors and grips so much? Should I just pick a single anchor point and stick with it, and learn to compensate for larger gaps? My main goal is target sho...

A Question about wooden arrow shafts

Hi folks, I've gotten back into archery lately and have picked up trad archery specifically (coming from a compound background). Now, fletching and installing inserts for my own carbon/aluminium arrows has never been an issue for me. However I've never pieced together my own wooden arrows. So today I ordered some POC shafts suited for my draw weight I'm using (30lbs on a bearpaw t/d) and have some 80g heads and traditional tapered nocks to go with them. (I might end up buying different pieces once I assemble and test a few first). My main concern is that I'm not sure if the nocks will require the arrow shafts to be tapered to fit, both are diameter 5/16 size. Also the tips are metal points with threads so is the best way to fit them is via using a bit of hot glue or gel and just screw them on or are there better methods? Mathews Arrow Web vs. Q-lite quiver

Time for a new bow quiver for my Mathews VXR28. I am between the Arrow Web and the Q-lite quivers. I don't always remove my quivers when up in the tree, which is why I am fine with either model. That being said, If I am going to leave a quiver on the bow, I will then want the lightest possible quiver, which seems to be the Q-lite. I also notice the difference in arrow support between the two models with the Q-lite being spaced out much further since it is a 2-piece quiver. Seems it gives much more arrow support at further ends of the shaft than the Arrow Web which looks to really only hold onto the arrow towards the upper 1/3 by the point. Anyone here have experience with either quiver and would not mind sharing? Thanks. submitted by /u/wrxit [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3l6RgJK via

Where to get creative counterweights for recurve?

While watching the Lancaster Archery Classic, I noticed one gentleman had a decorative wolf head as a small counterweight on his barebow. I would love something like that for my recurve. Does anyone have any idea where I could find something like that? I've scoured the internet to no avail... submitted by /u/Luke_Orlando [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3f33n6M via

Shot a longbow first time yesterday…

… and even with old “inherited” wooden arrows (the club got them gifted after someone inherited them) I shot much tighter groups and was on target much better than with a recurve. (We ended the session with a beer coaster shootout at 18m) With this hobby for 6 months now, and only shot recurve so far, this is a surprise. Guess I know what I’ll be shooting for the next few sessions. Clickers.

I have my first clicker and struggling to understand the basics of it. I know it’s for draw length but how long do you wait after it’s clicked to shoot? And- how can you aim if it’s already clicked back? Sorry if this doesn’t make much sense lol! submitted by /u/Katniss_Tris_Green [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3rKswrV via

Accessories for older Mission Craze? Sight/Stabilizer/other items?

Hi All, I have just purchased our first bow for my 10 year old and I to play around with doing some target practice in the yard. I found a Mission Craze for $50, and have been playing with it over the last few weeks trying to work on form and stance and at least hitting a target at 20 yards. The Craze we bought is REALLY basic, no stabilizer, and no sights on it (peep or fiber optic), but does have a kisser mounted on the bow string. With limited budget and an almost 10 year old bow, can someone recommend a sight for this bow, as well as maybe a stabilizer? Or do I even need have to a stabilizer on a bow of this size/weight??? Can I install a peep sight on this bow? Is it required with a optic sight? Also, it has a loop for a bow release, can someone recommend a good quality bow release that wont break the bank? We are VERY much newbies, so please feel free to comment like we are 10 (ha!). It's been very enjoyable thus far and hope to grow more into the sport. submitted b...

Any way to make arrows that are way too stiff halfway usable on my recurve?

So I bought a bunch of arrows on amazon when I still knew next to nothing about spine and draw weight and how they interact. The arrows are much too stiff for my three recurve bows that all have around 35lbs draw weight (on paper, in reality it is likely a good deal more because of my 32'' draw length) and they fishtail pretty badly on release. I have one target recurve with an adjustable button/plunger arrow rest. How do I adjust that to compensate as much as possible for the excessive stiffness? Should the spring of the plunger be set stiff or soft? Should the arrow point slightly to one side or as straight ahead as possible? submitted by /u/unikaro37 [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3y4klJk via

Question on olympic risers

Maybe an odd question but I'm surprised to see so few if any carbon risers at the Olympics why is that? Is it based on the sponsorship details or is there an advantage to an alloy/Al riser over carbon? submitted by /u/Grilledcheesenspam [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/2WhmJ1g via

Second hand bow?

Hello guys! I just finnished an archery class for beginers at my local club. After asking what bow should i get i was shown some new bows by the saleswoman and the prices were quite high. So are second hand bows still good and could i get a used one instead? Or is a bow not usable anymore after years of usage? Really trying to save some money since im not planing on joining any competitions and just looking to shoot for fun. Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/kjustec [link] [comments] from newest submissions : Archery https://ift.tt/3zHb3Do via
