I'm looking around for a nice quality longbow, and I have a soft spot for old fashioned self bows (I'd specifically like a flatbow, potentially with sinew or snakeskin backing), but I'm wondering how practical they are compared to bows made with modern materials and methods like carbon fiber or fiberglass laminate. I would like to have the best possible shooting performance out of this bow as I can with as much speed, smooth draw and little hand shock as possible. I'm also planning on using this bow my entire life and plan to take into all kinds of environments where it could get quite wet, dry or anything between. So what are the differences, if any? I would assume that self bows are more susceptible to environmental factors and that you'd need to lacquer them, but that shouldn't be a huge deal.
