Hey everyone, 26-year-old new archer here having a ton of fun sending 50 – 100 arrows down range a day. Got into archery due to many factors, it is my favorite class to play in video games, Legolas was my favorite character in Lord of the Rings, I have a huntress pin up tattoo and when I saw the barebow class competition for archery I was hooked. All the signs pointed for me to start archery but when I planned to start this winter near my birthday, I was halted due to needing multiple small surgeries on my draw hand.
Since I started, I have managed to get my girlfriend of 6 years into archery as well and it has been a great activity for us to do outdoors together. It has been very relaxing since we just talk and shoot while taking turns. It has been two weeks since I got my first lesson and the instructor started me off at a 20# draw. Once we got my form working and my anchor point set, I was ready to upgrade to my first bow a Samick Sage at a 30# draw.
My girlfriend now wants my Samick Sage, and I want to upgrade to a nicer bow at a higher draw weight. I possibly wanted to do some hunting and the state minimum draw weight is 35#. I would like to get a bow roughly around a 40 – 45# draw weight.
I have 2 major questions.
Question 1:
If I wanted to get into Barebow and compete, how does one go about doing so? I have been searching online and continuously cannot find any decent information. Maybe I am looking in the wrong places. I currently live in NY and can only find a place that does competitions in Long Island but I don't even know if they do Barebow competitions. If competitions are more readily available, I might just get into making a Barebow set up and practice with that.
Question 2:
If I decide to not go with the Barebow set up does anyone have any good recommendations for traditional bows? I was looking and bid on Ebay this week on a Martin Savannah Longbow that really interested me, but I lost. I do not really want to shoot primitive style just yet and I am more interested in what I believe is called American longbows or flat longbows for now.
