I'm trying to get back into archery after ~20 years away and I need some help getting set up. I want to re-learn with my old bow, but intend to step up to something a little heavier for hunting once I'm proficient. I've got a Martin Archery X-200 35# @28" recurve bow that appears to be in okay shape despite spending decades in various basements and garages. There's no cracks or anything, doesn't make weird noises, and I've shot it a bit recently and it felt fine. Am I correct in assuming it's probably safe?
The string is a little frayed, so I'll replace that before using it again. The AMO length is 60", can I just buy any string of that length or is there more to it? Last time I bought anything I was 14 and the clerk just handed me stuff to try. Now I live in the boonies and the shops by me only carry compound bows so I'm mostly on my own.
I don't have a single arrow that isn't missing fletching or bent, so I'll need new ones. The last ones I had were labeled Easton 1716 28", and the length still seems okay. I guess I haven't grown much. I don't know what fletching or nock type to go for, or if I should pick another arrow material altogether. I'm just looking for target arrows, they don't need to be fancy. The bow has a shelf, but no arrow rest (in case that matters).
I'm guessing traditional archery hasn't changed a ton recently, but let me know if there's anything else I should be looking into. Thanks!
